A Wife, A Mother, and a Money Launderer
Background
Putin’s invasion of Ukraine in February 2022 led to global trade limitations on the transportation of Russian crude oil & petroleum products. Internationally, a purchase price of $60 per barrel was established on oil purchased directly from Russia or Russian oil sold through a third party. These imposed sanctions were aimed at decreasing foreign revenues from Putin’s regime.
A byproduct of these restrictions is the drop in the profits of global companies that rely on selling Russia’s natural resources to the west. Despite the above, the Swiss company Paramount Oil & Commodities SA, owned by Jacqueline’s husband Niels Troost, has had higher profits since the 2022 invasion. Troost’s company and its subsidiary are under investigation in Switzerland and the US after he was banned from the UK & sanctioned for circumventing sanctions. While his name is well known to the authorities, her name remains in the shadows despite evidence of her involvement.
Personal Life and Children
Jacqueline is originally from the Netherlands, where she met her husband, Niels Troost. The couple got married and later relocated to Geneva, Switzerland, where Troost established Paramount Oil & Commodities SA. They have three children- The eldest is Christelle, who works with Alma Communications, a famous art events agency. The second, Eloise, is employed by Natixis Investment, a financial services company. The youngest is Sebastian, who studies at Bath University in the UK.
Jacqueline’s Part in Supporting The Russian Government
Numerous pieces of evidence indicate that Jacqueline’s participation was primarily financial. Jacqueline and her husband took advantage of the fact that real estate investments are difficult to track and used other investment companies, such as Sibylle SA, to launder money for her husband’s sanctioned companies. She is also accused of assisting people linked to Russian key figures in the oil industry and other individuals charged with sanctions evasion.
Jacqueline’s actions contributed to entities that support Putin and help strengthen Russia’s economy in times when the Western world is trying to stop their funding. The ever-changing management of Troost’s company structure and Jacqueline’s taking control of some of them enabled the couple to continue working under the radar. Jacqueline’s involvement in her husband’s illegal deals has yet to be fully discovered, although numerous pieces of evidence are coming to light. Individuals involved in financially supporting Russia should be accountable for their actions, whether they acted on the frontlines or behind the scenes.
